"March of Dimes" for
Cancer?
70 years ago, when the March of Dimes was launched
to fight birth defects, the dimes poured in. Stand Up To Cancer
hopes to duplicate that success in the service of the war
against cancer. What was a plea for 10 cent donations in 1938, however, is the plea
for $5 bills today. Stand Up To Cancer hopes to bring in 10,000 $5
donations in a month. You can even help spread the word by placing a
"donation widget" on your Facebook page. Find out more about this
campaign, and see a video from Meryl Streep, here.
New Light on Lung
Cancer
The 6th leading cause
of cancer deaths in the US is lung cancer in people who never smoked. A new
guide by an expert committee
brought together by the Johns Hopkins
Kimmel Cancer Center offers information for the treatment of people who never
smoked and developed lung cancer..about 10-15% of all lung cancer patients. The
guide's authors urge clinical trial organizers to note participant smoking
status. Never-smokers, the committee concluded, should be anyone who has
smoked less than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
Prostate Cancer
Screening Awareness Week
The third week in
September (Sept 20-26th) is National Prostate Cancer Awareness and Screening
week. Routine screening for men of average risk is not
endorsed by any major cancer organization. What is endorsed is "The Talk". If
your a man you should talk to your doctor about whether prostate cancer
screening is right for you.
If you've decided that screening is right for you, find out
where free or low-cost screenings near you are being offered
during awareness week or call toll free 866-4PROST8.

Cupcakes for a
Cause
September is Childhood
Cancer Awareness Month. Next week (Sept 21 through 27) bakeries, individual
bakers, and florists around the country are participating in an observance
designed to raise awareness, the spirits of a child touched by cancer, and
research dollars. You can find out which bakeries and florists in your area
are participating at the Cupcakes for a Cause web
site. You can also download a free kit to help you organize your
own bake sale.
HPV Vaccine for
Guys?
A expert panel of the
FDA has voted to support giving the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
to boys. Persistant HPV infection causes cervical and
anal cancers and genital warts. It's also been
associated with some head and neck cancers. Both girls and boys can be
infected. While most HPV infections clear by themselves, the vaccine was approved as
another defense against cervical cancer and genital warts. Currently, it's approved
for use in girls age 9-26.
While the
FDA's expert panel has declared the vaccine safe in boys, the full FDA
does not have to follow the recommendation. Read the full story
