Supplements Can Interfere
with Cancer Treatments
Taking
herbs to boost the immune system seems like such a good idea when your battling
cancer. Every little bit helps, right? Not necessaarily. Some herbal supplements
could be interfering with the conventional treatments doctors are
prescribing and that's why it is so important for patients to tell their doctor
everything they're taking.
A story this week by the Associated Press tells of Bradenton Florida's
Vince Palella's scarey "wakeup" to the facts.
An article
in the journal
Cancer this month details the use of mega-vitamins by many breast cancer
patients despite the warnings and urged more studies about the consequences.
Pink on the
Links
When Phil Mickelson shows up at the US Open at the Bethpage State Park
in Farmingdale, NY, June 18, he'll reportedly be greeted by a small sea of
pink - in honor of his wife Amy's battle with breast cancer. The
world's #2 ranked golfer dropped out of the PGA tour last month
after his wife's diagnosis. Now a group of his fans say they'll wear
pink shirts to the US Open to show support. Read
the story here. Mickelson is playing at this week's St. Jude
Classic in prep for the US Open. Bloomberg News reports "he
is looking forward to the distraction after the most emotional weeks of his
life."
Hand Sanitizer Recall
| Because hand sanitizers are an important
infection-fighting tool for people with a weakened immune system, recalls
are worth noting. The FDA announced the recall of some hand sanitizers
made by Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory Inc. of Roy, Utah due to
the risk of bacterial contamination. The sanitizers are sold under a
variety of brand names. CLICK on the graphic to

In the Lab/In
the Clinic
Anti-obesity drugs may be helpful after chemo and bone
marrow transplants. Researchers at Children's Hospital in Boston are
looking at the role fat cells in bone marrow may play in blocking the
formation of new red blood cells. Their studies in mice have, so far, seemed to
contradict the conventional wisdom that fat cells just take up unused space in
the marrow. They believe the fat cells may actively block the formation of
new red blood cells and that if the formation of fat cells is blocked, more red
blood cells may grow after chemo and bone marrow transplant. Read
more about the research here .
