Armstrong to Ride Again - and Everybody's Talking

Lance Armstrong announced plans to go for an eighth Tour de France yellow jersey, after a three year retirement from competative cycling.  He brushed aside sduggestions that at age 36 he's too old to compete in the field having already proved that he could return from stage 4 testicular cancer to win the grueling cycling competition 7 times. His announcement has taken many by surprise.  Here's an article from Agence France-Presse.

The Baltimore Sun  newspaper hosted a "debate" ..should he or shouldn't he.. read it here.

Columnist Randy Hill worries that the cancer survivor community has a lot to lose if Armstrong's un-retirement goes the way of Michael Jordan's return to basketball.

Stand Up To Cancer  -

The  Stand Up To Cancer Telethon  broadcast  last Friday night won the ratings war. An average  combined 10.3 million Americans watched  and togther contributed more than $100 million toward cancer research.  It was the only show broadcast by ABC, CBS, and NBC between 8p and 9p leading into the new television season and it was the single most watched TV show last Fridat night. But when added together the two networks that didn't broadcast the telethon - Fox and the CW -  beat  SU2C for viewers  - by a nose -  with an average 11.1 million viewers combined.

 Health $$$$UP UP and Away

Like you didn't know this already. The Mercer consulting firm reported last week that employers can expect to pay more for the health plans they provide  their employees next year, on the average of 8% more.  And if they are small employers  - with between 10-499 workers - the increase is more likely to be 10%. What this means for their employees is higher premiums, deductibles, and co-pays.  About 19% of employers say they'll act to lower their costs by introducing a "consumer directed health plan" (CDHP). CDHPs include  tax-advantaged health plan savings accounts and reimbursement. Read more about the trends hereRead the AP write up here.
