Obtaining Medical Records for New Oncologist

There is a law called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that is designed to protect the privacy of medical records.

The federal government realizes that people who live in areas hit by disasters need to have their medical records available as easily as possible and written permission to transfer medical records may not be possible.

HIPAA rules have been changed in anticipation of these situations so patients can get the treatment needed as fast as possible.

Remind your doctor, hospital, or treatment facility of this if they say they cannot transfer the medical records.
