Medical Kit

Your Medical Kit should contain:

A log with the following information (use a small notebook)

  • type and stage of cancer
  • type of treatment like chemotherapy (names of drugs), radiation, or surgery treatment schedule
  • date of last treatment
  • most recent blood counts (keep copies of the lab sheets if available)
  • name of treating physician/treatment facility
  • list of medication being taken for cancer treatment side effects, and medicines for other conditions
  • list other illnesses or health problems

Extra medications for treatment side effects & other health problems in case drug stores/pharmacies are not available.

Copies of all insurance cards/information

First aid kit

Disinfectant hand wash

Clean towel and bed linen

Why You Need These Items

Information log - If you are not able to resume treatment at home,  the information log will be available immediately if your medical records cannot be accessed. For example, many people were evacuated long distances after hurricane Katrina and records were not available for many weeks. A log gives another cancer treatment center an idea at what point in the cycle treatment was interrupted and where to pick it up.

Extra medications for treatment side effects – Drug stores may not be available immediately after the disaster, so an emergency supply will help get you through until more can be found.

Insurance Information - Having a back-up copy of all insurance information, including phone numbers, will be readily available if originals are lost or destroyed.

First Aid Kit & Disinfectant Wash – People being treated for cancer are more prone to illness as cancer treatment not only destroys the cancer cells, but also destroys cells that support the immune system protecting people from germs that cause infection. All scrapes and injuries must be kept clean and covered. Hands must be washed frequently to kill germs.

Clean Towel & Bed Linen - Shelters do not provide any linen, so oftentimes many people are expected to share these items. Cancer patients should not share these items because of the increased chance of sharing germs as well.
